Twenty years of existence of every institution or company gives an opportunity for reminding ourselves of the period of its establishment, but also to its development and ascent. The National Insurance Bureau of the Republic of Macedonia is celebrating this year an anniversary of that kind, and that is a nice occasion, briefly, to remember its growth and certainly, to point out the strategies for its further development and role in the frames of the insurance market of the Republic of Macedonia. After the sovereignty of the Republic of Macedonia and the establishment of an independent and self-government country, beside the other status insignia which denoted the independence of the country, the insurance business, also, should have ensured according to the international standards, smooth movement of people and vehicles out of the Republic of Macedonia.

For that purpose, at the end of 1993, the Stock Insurance and Reinsurance company “Makedonija” and the Insurance company “Vardar”, by means of an agreement established the National Insurance Bureau of the Republic of Macedonia. This was only a precondition for registration of the National Insurance Bureau, and at the same time, in 1994, to become a member of the big family of the Council of Bureau, situated in London. In May 1994, the National Insurance Bureau was admitted as a full member of the Council of Bureau, thus attaining the right to issue Macedonian, internationally admitted Green Cards. Hence, the year of 1994, is taken as a beginning of establishment and operation of the National Insurance Bureau of the Republic of Macedonia.

This enabled our citizens to travel with their vehicles, smoothly, in all European countries, and that advantage was especially significant for the expenses of the transportation companies.

As the insurance market was growing, the number of established insurance companies was also increased and, consequently, the role and the importance of the National Insurance Bureau. Today, in compliance with the Agreement for establishment, we are proud to highlight that there are 11 insurance companies that are members of the National Insurance Bureau.

In addition, in compliance with the Agreement for establishment, the Statute of the Bureau and the Compulsory Traffic Insurance Law, as well as the Insurance Supervision Law, the National Insurance Bureau has a wide range of competences, not only in the part of the international representation of its members, but also in the part of the cooperation and the representation of its members in the domestic institutions and bodies.

Twenty years are sufficient period of attained knowledge and experience, which are guaranty that the taken duties in the strategy for development of the National Insurance Bureau, in the following four years, will be realised in a high professional level, thus giving a possibility to the Bureau to strengthen its role and significance in domestic and international plan.
